General Questions

What is the Polar Plunge?

The Polar Plunge is a series of events where people jump into a frozen lake to support Special Olympics Minnesota.

Is there an age requirement to Plunge

There is no age requirement to participate in the Polar Plunge. Young children are more than welcome to Plunge and that decision is left to the sole discretion of a parent or guardian. Individuals under the age of 18 are required to have a parent or guardian present at the Plunge at all times.

How deep is the water?

A consistent depth cannot be guaranteed at every Polar Plunge location. At most locations, the Plunge hole is cut in an area so that the water is close to waist deep. If you are concerned about the water depth, please talk with the professionally trained dive team in the water prior to Plunging.

What do I wear to Plunge?

You may wear whatever appropriate clothing you want to Plunge. Many teams dress up and coordinate costumes, and we suggest that you bring a towel and dry clothes to change into after you are finished Plunging.
Please Note: Plungers must wear shoes at all times.

Where do I change clothes before and after Plunging?

Most Plunge locations will have separate men’s and women’s changing areas available. Law Enforcement Officials will be present and monitor the area. Special Olympics Minnesota is not responsible for any personal items that are lost, misplaced or damaged at a Polar Plunge.

When do I receive my incentives?

Plungers receive their incentives upon check-in at their Plunge location. Incentives earned are based on the amount of money received in the Plungers account at the time of check-in. Special Olympics Minnesota is not responsible for replacing or exchanging incentives that are missing, sized incorrectly or damaged as a result of normal wear.

Can I purchase incentives?

During the Polar Plunge season, incentives are not for sale. After the season is complete, limited quantities of incentives will become available for purchase online at PlungeMN.org.

Is alcohol allowed at the Polar Plunge?

Outside alcohol is not permitted anywhere on or around a Plunge location.

Where are Polar Plunge photos posted?

Special Olympics Minnesota works with a number of amazing volunteer photographers throughout the Polar Plunge season. We will work to have all photos posted to our Flickr account as soon as possible after each Plunge. In the weeks following your Plunge, check out your location’s event page to see if photos have been posted.

What is the Polar Plunge cancellation policy?

Special Olympics Minnesota reserves the right to cancel an event due to inclement weather. The most important thing at a Plunge is the safety of everyone. If a Plunge is cancelled, charitable contributions will not be refunded. All Plungers will have the opportunity to transfer their registration to a different location and receive their incentives.
